“UN Human Rights High Commissioner to Sri Lanka scheduled to arrive”
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on June 23rd for a three-day official visit. This marks the first visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Sri Lanka in ten years, with the last visit occurring in 2015.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the High Commissioner’s visit follows an invitation extended by Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath during a meeting in Geneva last year.
During his official tour, the High Commissioner is expected to meet with several key officials, including the President, Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Justice, among other parties.
It is also reported that during his visit, High Commissioner Volker Türk plans to travel to several areas, including Kandy, Jaffna, and Trincomalee, and is scheduled to participate in several special sessions focused on human rights.
