14 Deaths, 26,000 Cases

From June 30 to July 5, a Dengue Control Week will be implemented across 16 districts in Sri Lanka, as announced by Community Medical Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera of the National Dengue Control Unit at a press conference in Colombo.

Dr. Samaraweera stated that the south-western monsoon rainfall has led to an increase in the mosquito population, necessitating this Dengue Control Week to manage the situation.

Dengue prevention week from 30th June

“Currently, 26,775 dengue cases and 14 dengue deaths have been reported across Sri Lanka,” said Dr. Samaraweera. “The Western, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces are reporting a higher number of cases.”

She further explained, “We are implementing a mosquito control week again in 111 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across 16 districts. Our teams will inspect high-risk premises to identify and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites. If breeding sites are maintained carelessly, red notices will be issued, and legal action will be taken.”

Dr. Samaraweera also highlighted that over 26,000 dengue cases have been reported island-wide, with one child death. 45% of the reported cases are from the Western Province.
