The inaugural meeting of the Colombo Municipal Council commenced today (16) at 9:30 AM, presided over by Western Provincial Local Government Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara.

The National People’s Power (NPP) secured control of the Colombo Municipal Council, where no single party had won a clear majority in this local government election.

Accordingly, Ms. Vraie Cally Balthazaar was elected as the Mayor of Colombo, receiving 61 votes.

For the position of Colombo Mayor, Riza Saruk of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was nominated, while Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) was also nominated.

A secret ballot was then held, and Vraie Cally Balthazaar was elected as the 26th Mayoress of Colombo with a majority of 7 votes.

Riza Saruk of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 54 votes, and two votes were rejected. Hemantha Kumara was elected as the Deputy Mayor based on majority consensus.
