Two individuals have unfortunately died from the new COVID-19 variant currently spreading across the country, according to Professor Dushantha Medagedara, Chief Professor of Medicine at the Wayamba Faculty of Medicine.

Professor Medagedara made these remarks while addressing a press conference at the Health Promotion Bureau. Elaborating further on the situation, he stated:

Health authorities clarify COVID-19 deaths

“Between 9% and 13% of respiratory patients have contracted COVID-19 due to the new variant. This COVID-19 infection presents in a very low-severity condition, with minimal harmful effects. However, it can become serious for individuals over 65 years old who have weakened immune systems or existing comorbidities. Such individuals should be particularly careful.”

He added, “There have been two deaths in Sri Lanka; both individuals had underlying complications. Apart from these cases, there isn’t a serious situation that warrants unnecessary panic. However, specific groups should remain vigilant.”
