Opposition Leaders Poson message

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, in his Poson message, urged everyone to follow the path of Buddhism and work towards making Sri Lanka a self-sufficient nation once again.

For thousands of years, the people of our country have celebrated the Poson festival with immense devotion and reverence, commemorating the arrival of Arahant Mahinda Thero in Sri Lanka, who brought the supreme Dhamma preached by the Buddha.

Historical sources attest that with the arrival of Arahant Mahinda Thero, our country not only received Buddhism but also the influence of 18 castes of skilled artisans, representing various arts, crafts, and cultures. The impact of these arts and crafts on our nation’s culture has been immense.

Until then, the lives of people who worshipped trees and rocks gained meaning and the correct Dhamma. This Dhamma and the arts and crafts contributed to our nation’s progress for thousands of years. Every aspect of people’s lives became intertwined with Buddhism, which led to better governance and a more prosperous public life. Because of this, our country became known worldwide as the “Granary of the East.”

However, there is now a question of whether our country truly remains in that state. Therefore, as a nation, we must rise again. We must prosper and become self-sufficient. To achieve this, we must adopt the correct guidance shown by Buddhism and move forward. It should be the responsibility of the state to protect Buddhism while giving due respect to other religions. On this Poson Poya day, everyone should resolve to fulfil this responsibility without fail.
