The final rites for the deceased Malini Fonseka, the ‘Queen of Sinhala Cinema,’ are scheduled to take place today (26) afternoon at Independence Square, Colombo, with state honours.

Malini Fonseka, the veteran actress known as the ‘Queen of Sinhala Cinema,’ passed away last Saturday (24).

She passed away at the age of 78. Malini Fonseka, born ‘Wanni Arachchige Malini Senehelatha Fonseka,’ was born on April 30, 1947, in Kelaniya.

Malini Fonseka, who entered cinema with the 1968 film ‘Punchi Baba,’ contributed to nearly 150 films over six decades, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional cinematic creations.

The Government Information Department has issued a statement regarding the arrangements for the final rites of the late Malini Fonseka.

According to the statement, the body, which is currently lying at the Tarangani Hall of the National Film Corporation, will be moved to Independence Square, Colombo 07, at 8:00 AM today (26), and then public respects will be paid from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

At 3:30 PM, alumni and artists from her alma mater, Gurukula Vidyalaya, Kelaniya, will escort the body to a specially constructed platform for Buddhist religious rites. Following this, Buddhist religious ceremonies, monastic blessings, and special tributes from artists about her cinematic career will take place.

Finally, at 5:45 PM, the body will be taken to the pyre, and after floral tributes, the pyre will be lit, marking the conclusion of the final rites for Malini Fonseka, the ‘Queen of Sinhala Cinema.
