“16 years for the war victory”
This National War Heroes’ Remembrance Ceremony will be held under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Defence (Retired) Major General Aruna Jayasekara. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, and Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Gunathilake, who led the tri-forces to end terrorism, are also scheduled to participate.
On May 18, 2009, the brutal war that had been ongoing ended with the death of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at the Nandikadal lagoon at the hands of the war heroes. The Sri Lankan security forces are also credited with rescuing thousands of civilians held hostage by the LTTE through the world’s largest humanitarian operation.
