The National Peoples Party led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was victorious at the Local Government Elections held on the 6^th of May 2025. The NPP secured 43.26% of the votes followed by SJB led by Sajith Premadasa who obtained 21.69% of the votes and the SLPP was third with a 9.17% of the votes.

The Local Government Elections was last held in 2018 during the tenure of President Gothabaya Rajapaksa, which the ruling SLPP won by obtaining 40% of the votes.
