Today the 20th of April 2025, marks Easter Sunday, a day celebrated by Christian devotees worldwide in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians observe Easter as the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead three days after sacrificing his life on the cross to save all humanity from sin. The 40-day Lenten season, during which Christians engage in various religious observances remembering the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus, also concludes on Easter Sunday.

Christians around the world celebrate Easter today

The Bible states that He, who was crucified on Mount Calvary in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, appeared to his followers on this day after his resurrection.

A special midnight mass, attended by the Most Reverend Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, was held yesterday (19) night at St. Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena. Midnight masses for Easter Sunday were held in every church across the island last night.

It is also mentioned that Holy Masses will be held in all churches across the island today as well.

Here, the Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Colombo, Father Jude Chrisantha Fernando, stated that Sri Lankan Christian devotees are also celebrating today’s Easter festival with great solemnity.
