Inaugurated in 2008 to promote a T20 format with various franchises bidding for players to make their team. The inaugural season started in April 2008, commencing with a “high-profile ceremony” in New Delhi. BCCI Vice-president at that time Lalit Modi, who led the IPL initiative, provided details of the tournament, including its format, prize money, franchise revenue system, and squad composition rules. This has been a very successful format and this year 2025 the 18th edition of the IPL commenced on the 22nd of March 2025.
