Plane crashes in Wariyapola

The two trainee pilots ejected from the jet and survived.

A Sri Lankan Air Force training jet crashed in the Minuwangatte area of Wariyapola this morning . The aircraft involved in the accident was a K8 type training jet belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force.

It is reported that the jet, which took off from Katunayake, lost radar contact and subsequently crashed in the Minuwangoda area of Wariyapola.

The Sri Lanka Air Force stated that the two trainee pilots safely ejected from the aircraft before it crashed.

The chief training instructor was caught in a power line during the landing, and sustained injuries. The two pilots who ejected from the aircraft landed with the aid of parachutes near Auwlegama  Sundaragama School, close to the Minuwangate area. Subsequently, residents joined together to transport the two air officers to Kurunegala Hospital in a Suwaseriya ambulance. However, the cause of the aircraft accident is yet to be revealed, and the aircraft crashed into a coconut grove and was completely destroyed by fire.
