A special discussion was held recently at the Bandaranaike International Airport premises under the leadership of Hon. Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake. During this discussion, it was decided to initiate the necessary steps for the government to commence domestic air travel in Sri Lanka.

Given the rapid increase in tourist arrivals, it was also decided to expand the airport facilities as much as possible. A decision was made to add approximately 20 additional check-in counters to the existing ones, and a site inspection was conducted for this purpose.

Furthermore, it was resolved to improve facilities and invite other international airlines to operate at the airport. Minister Rathnayake also provided guidance to prepare for an expected passenger volume of approximately 12 million annually by 2028.

Since all these initiatives are closely tied to the tourism industry, it was noted that these steps would significantly contribute to elevating the country’s tourism sector, which is one of the main sources of revenue.

This special meeting was attended by Defense Secretary Sampath Thuyyakontha, Ministry Secretary Senior Professor Kapila C. Perera, Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Wasu Bandu Edirisinghe, Chairman of the Tourism Board Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority Sunil Jayaratne, Chairman of Airports and Aviation Services Chief Vice Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, and several other officials.
