Today marks the historic occasion of 78 years of talkie cinema in Sri Lanka and 53 years of the National Film Corporation. The journey of talkie cinema, which began in 1947 with ‘Kadawunu Poronduwa,’ stands as a powerful landmark in the country’s history. In 1972, the establishment of the National Film Corporation became the central institution in the Sri Lankan film industry. The national celebration related to this event will be held today at 3:00 PM at the Tarangani Hall of the Film Corporation.

78 years of Sri Lankan cinema

The event will be presided over by Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hinduma Sunil Seniviratne, and will include the recognition of veteran filmmakers and the unveiling of several books written about cinema.
