“Weather warning for January 17th 2025”
The Meteorology Department has issued a weather advisory regarding strong winds and rough seas.
This advisory is effective until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow (17th).The advisory applies to sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, as well as from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Accordingly, wind speeds in these sea areas may occasionally range between 50–60 km/h.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department has announced that intermittent rain or thundershowers may occur in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm may occur in some places in the Eastern Province and in the Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa Districts. In the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara Districts, isolated rain or thundershowers may occur during the evening or night.
Strong winds of about 30–40 km/h may occur intermittently in the eastern slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District.
Mist may occur in the morning in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara Districts.The Meteorology Department urges the public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thunderstorms.
