Cardinal Ranjith urges for a new constitution that will strengthen democracy

Following a meeting with Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Archbishop of Colombo last afternoon, the Cardinal addressed the media with the following comments.

“It is extremely important to uncover the truth behind the Easter attacks. A comprehensive investigation is needed to determine who was behind it, why it was carried out, and with whose support it was executed. Many incidents of this nature have occurred in Sri Lanka over the years. Proper investigations have not been conducted into numerous issues such as murders and disappearances. We demand the establishment of a mechanism to investigate all corrupt actions carried out against democracy. This requires constitutional changes. A new constitution is necessary to overcome the various weaknesses present in the current constitution.”
