At a press conference held in Colombo yesterday (15), JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the NPP must exercise its overwhelming parliamentary majority properly.
We currently have a two-thirds majority, or 159 seats. Because of the arrogant and anti-people actions of past governments, people have been wary to give such power to any party since 1977. We won’t repeat the same mistakes again. Our focus will be national development, anti-corruption efforts, and enhancing democracy through accountability,” Silva said.
Silva pointed out that the NPP has inherited a bankrupt nation and acknowledged the daunting challenges that lie ahead.
“NPP promises to provide responsible leadership”
In the run-up to the presidential election on September 21, the General Secretary praised the electorate for rejecting the fear mongering of the NPP’s opponents to convince the public that Anura Kumara Dissanayake would cause the economy to collapse, opponents spent a lot of money. We have shown in recent weeks that these claims are baseless,” he said.
The NPP’s victory in the North and East, Silva added, was a significant setback to racism. In order to dissuade Tamil and Muslim votes, some Tamil leaders ran a campaign against us, using false information and discriminatory myths. Public opinion has exposed their false claims that we were anti-Islamic. “The era of politics based on race and religion are over,” he said.
