Six individuals who allegedly acted in a way that endangered both national security and the safety of tourists have been taken into custody, according to Sri Lanka’s Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath, and investigations are underway.

The minister revealed that one of the arrestees is a foreign person. According to him, the suspects were taken into custody in relation to instances involving the photography of major financial sites in Colombo and intelligence reports indicating a potential attack in the Arugam Bay area.

Arugam Bay’s security threat led to the arrest of six people, including a foreign national

Minister Herath stated that in order to protect foreign visitors and maintain national security, they took prompt action after learning of a potential danger.

The opposition has been waiting to take advantage of the issue. “That’s the truth,” he said.

Six individuals have been taken into custody thus far. Investigations are still on, and five Sri Lankans and a Maldivian are in custody. We are still unable to determine the nature of the plot or effort based on those investigations. Because the information gathered from the investigations and the six people who were arrested does not allow for the drawing of such a conclusion.

There is no need for a misinterpretation of this, he continued, but the people of the country do wish to guarantee that security.

The minister said that the President, in his capacity as defence minister, had issued the required directives and that the three-member Cabinet had promptly called a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC).
