Spokesman for the Cabinet, Minister Vijitha Herath, stated yesterday (01) that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had allotted Rs. 5 billion for the conduct of the general election on November 14.

Addressing at the post-cabinet media conference to present the decisions taken during President Dissanayake’s first Cabinet meeting, Minister Herath said parliamentary elections will need an expenditure of Rs 11 billion.

According to Herath, the Budget 2024 had allocated funds for the September 21 presidential election.

Rupees 5 billion has been set aside for the general election; the remaining amount would come from the 2025 budget.

According to the Cabinet Spokesman, the President has the authority to designate funds for parliamentary elections.

Thus, he claimed, five billion rupees had been set aside for that specific reason.

“The budget for 2025, which will be presented to the next Parliament, will allocate the remaining six billion,” he said.
