Sembuge Don Shelton Gamini Fonseka was born on the 21st of March 1936 and was a product of St Thomas College, Mt Lavinia. He entered films in the early fifties as a member of the technical crew of the late Dr. Lester James Peries. His first screen appearance came in Rekhawa in a mob scene and he later portrayed a considerable role in Lester’s Sandeshaya taking him to unparalleled heights in the cinema world. Apart from being a versatile actor he directed many films like, Uthumaneni (1980), Mayurige Kathawa (1980), Sagarayak Mada (1981), Ra Manamali (1981), Sakwithi Suwaya (1982), Koti Waligaya (1986), Nomiyena Minisun (1994) and Anthima Reya in 1998.

Filmgoers would never forget the roles played by him in films like Parasathumal, Welikathara, Chandiya, Nidhanaya, Soora Chawraya, Athma Pooja. Hulawali, Sagarayak Meda, Uthumaneni and several others.

Remembering Gamini Fonseka on his 20th death anniversary

The 20th death anniversary of this Sri Lankan film legend Gamini Fonseka falls today, 30th September .I am sure there may be a memorable event held today to coincide with the demise of this legendary actor who took the silver screen by storm. Many of his films are still broadcast on many local television channels across the country, bringing back memories of yesteryear. He was a good lyrist too and has penned many memorable songs and whereby  many of his films were box office hits.

The legendary actor will be remembered today on his twentieth death anniversary for his contribution to the film industry in Sri Lanka.
