As the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Senior DIG Priyantha Weerasooriya has been appointed.

The PMD said that, in accordance with the President’s constitutional power, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appointed Senior DIG Priyantha Weerasooriya as Acting IGP.

Presenting the appointment letter to the Acting IGP at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo yesterday (27) was President’s Secretary Dr. Nandika Kumanayake.

Weerasooriya has served as the North Central Province’s Senior SIG since March 2024, when he was appointed to this position.

With 36 years of impeccable service in law enforcement, Weerasooriya held critical positions in operational, middle, and strategic management while serving at a variety of grades, from Police Constable to Senior DIG.

Remarkably, in the 158-year history of the police force, SDIG Priyantha Weerasooriya is the only officer to advance from the position of Police Constable to Inspector General of Police (IGP).

After taking his legal studies at the University of Colombo, he was sworn in as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the Sri Lanka Law College.

A Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management is another degree he possesses.

remarkably, SDIG Weerasooriya has received ten IGP commendation letters for his 36 years of exceptional service in the Police Department.

SDIG Weerasooriya has participated in UN peacekeeping missions in Haiti and East Timor. He has also held positions as Director of Police Logistics and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) handling Crime and Traffic.

He was the SDIG of the North Central Province at the time of his nomination as Acting IGP.
