Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake announced last Wednesday (25), that all candidates who took part in the recently ended presidential election must turn in their campaign expenditure reports to the Election Commission by October 13th.
Speaking to the media in Colombo, Rathnayake stated that all contenders for the presidency had been advised that their election campaign spending reports needed to be turned in no later than 21 days after the results were declared.
“By October 13, 2024, all candidates must turn in their campaign expenditure reports.”
Ratnayake stated that the records would be accessible to the public for review when all 38 candidates submitted in the expenses reports. If inconsistencies are discovered in any candidate’s report, complaints can be filed with the police as long as the accusations are accompanied by appropriate documentation.
The maximum allowed campaign expenditure for the 2024 presidential election is Rs. 109 per voter, according to new campaign finance restrictions.
Candidates were permitted to use up to 60% of the cap, or Rs. 1.12 billion, on their campaigns under the new restrictions. The spending cap for recognized political parties was 40 percent of the total, or Rs. 740 million.
