DIG Nihal Thalduwa, Head of the Crime Division and Police Spokesperson, said during a media conference yesterday (19) that the police were ready to offer any support needed by the Elections Commission (EC) to ensure a free and fair election tomorrow.
Each polling centre will have two sets of police officers stationed there.
“We sometimes deploy three officers to places that serve a sizable voter base. Every police officer assigned to a specific duties has reported to their station. Mobile police teams will start patrolling voting centres and surrounding areas on Friday at six o’clock, he said.
“To help the EC in conducting a free and fair election, police go call of duty.”
One of the two policemen assigned to each polling centre, according to DIG Thalduwa, would visit the spot where ballot boxes are distributed.
He said, “This officer will coordinate with the polling place’s Returning Officer and accompany them, along with the ballot box, back to the centre.”
“The other officer will have guarded the polling place in the meanwhile. Both policemen would be on duty at the facility at all times starting on Saturday morning, he continued.
