Hunter Biden surprised federal prosecutors, who were prepared to start his trial on Thursday, by entering a guilty plea to each of the nine counts in his case involving federal tax evasion.
Allegations that the son of US President Joe Biden purposefully avoided paying $1.4 million (£1 million) in income tax between 2016 and 2019 were previously refuted.
When prosecutors objected, Biden, 54, agreed to simply plead guilty despite initially saying he wanted to enter a plea where he would accept the charges while maintaining his innocence.
The judge asked Biden if he agreed that he had “committed every element of every crime charged” after the prosecution had read the court the full 56-page indictment against him.

This is his second criminal conviction of the year, and his last-minute reversal was first revealed in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday just before jury selection began.
Abbe Lowell, the lawyer for Biden, stated that his client wished to avoid going to trial “for the sake of private interest,” thereby avoiding his friends and family from bearing witness regarding an incident that occurred “when he was addicted to drugs.”
According to Judge Mark Scarsi, Biden could have received a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and fines ranging from $500,000 to $1 million if he had pleaded guilty to all nine counts.
On December 16, one month after the White House race but one month before his father steps down from office, he is scheduled to be sentenced.
In the past, President Biden has declared that he would not pardon his son using his executive authority.
