Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the presidential candidate for the National People’s Power (NPP), promised to establish a government dedicated to eliminating the influence of drugs and the criminal underworld.

Speaking at a Negombo public rally, Dissanayake brought attention to the close relationship that exists between organised crime and local politicians.

Under the NPP government, Anura Kumara promises to end drug use and organised crime.

In our nation, drugs and the underworld coexist. In the distant past, organised crime gangs did not exist in Sri Lanka. There were crimes, but no organised crime groups. However, how are crimes now? They now commit murders in Dubai while they are hiding. You are able to run drug operations while incarcerated. Local politicians were the ones who founded these organised crime gangs, he claimed.

Dissanayake went on to say that the NPP-led government would act quickly and decisively to disrupt these networks of organised crime.
