According to her husband, Susan Wojcicki, a trailblazing tech executive who influenced Google and YouTube, has passed away. She was 56 years old.
In addition to being a major contributor to the founding of Google, Wojcicki led YouTube for nine years before resigning last year to concentrate on her “family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about,” as she stated at the time.In the largely male-dominated tech sector, she was one of the most well-respected female executives.

Her partnership with Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the other co-founders of Google, started soon after they turned their search engine into a company in 1998. For $1,700 a month, Wojcicki rented the garage of her Menlo Park, California, home to them, establishing an early alliance. Both Page and Brin, who were 25 years old at the time, spent five months honing their search engine in Wojcicki’s garage before moving Google into a more official office and eventually recruiting their former landlord to join the team.
After joining Google, then known as Alphabet, in 1999 as its marketing manager, Wojcicki held a number of roles as the company expanded its online advertising presence through the acquisitions of DoubleClick in 2008 and YouTube in 2006. From 2011 to early 2014, she was Google’s senior vice president of advertising and commerce. From 2014 to 2023, she led YouTube as CEO.
In a letter to staff, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Her loss is devastating for all of us who know and love her, for the thousands of Googlers she led over the years, and for millions of people all over the world who looked up to her, benefited from her advocacy and leadership, and felt the impact of the incredible things she created at Google, YouTube, and beyond.”Sheryl Sandberg, the former COO of Facebook and vice president of Google’s sales and operations from 2001 to 2008 before joining Facebook, stated in a Facebook post that Wojcicki had a significant influence on her career in technology.
At the start of my tech career, she helped me navigate a rapidly expanding and somewhat chaotic organisation by teaching me the ropes, according to Sandberg. She was the one I repeatedly went to for guidance. She was also this person to a great number of other people. Late on Friday, her spouse Dennis Troper posted on social media to confirm her passing.
He wrote, “After two years of living with non-small cell lung cancer, my beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today.”In addition to being my lifelong best friend and partner, Susan was also a bright mind, a devoted mother, and a close friend to many, according to Troper.
She passed away, and no further information was given at the time.
Marco Troper, the 19-year-old son of Wojcicki and Troper, passed away in February while residing on the UC Berkeley campus as a first-year student.
