According to the former president Maithripala Sirisena, he has not chosen to back any of the contenders for the 2024 presidential election.In a statement, Sirisena also denied some media reports about him and the claims made about him by certain opposition and ruling party politicians.

The former president also emphasised that the court has not yet made a determination regarding the party’s presidential candidate, and that the problems that have arisen within the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) are currently being resolved in court.As a result, he stressed that, in accordance with the party’s Constitution, only the Chairman of the SLFP possesses complete authority and that, as such, the appointments and choices made by other party members are invalid.
