R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, the chairman of the Election Commission (EC), urged all candidates running in the September 21 presidential election to abide by election laws yesterday (15 September), as doing so is punishable. He threatened to remove the offenders from their eligibility.

Candidates who break election laws risk losing even their civic rights, the EC Chief warns.

The EC Chairman said, “The human and physical resources of state institutions, including state owned banks, local and provincial councils, must not be used for electioneering,” in reference to the 39 candidates who had signed nomination papers.

According to the EC Chief, the candidates needed to make sure that their backers complied with the law. According to him, candidates should enforce good behaviour from their supporters because failing to do so could result in the loss of your civic rights.
