The Election Commission (EC) has asked the police cybercrimes unit for assistance in examining a phishing website that imitates the EC’s official website and aims to collect personal data from citizens of Sri Lanka.

Website emulating EC’s was linked to a Google server in the US.

The Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) reported that the fraudulent website, which was hosted on a Google server located in the United States, had been detected by Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake.

According to Ratnayake, a court order was attempted to get Google to divulge the identity of the site’s creator, and a request had been made to the police cybercrimes division on Saturday. SLCERT discovered the phoney website on Friday evening. Its link, which falsely claims the EC is hiring for positions related to elections and is requesting sensitive personal information, such as complete names, dates of birth, and phone numbers, has been making the rounds on WhatsApp, X, and other messaging services.

Ratnayake said that even though the fraudulent website was operated from a US server, it was still too early to link it to a particular nation because it could be accessed from anywhere in the world.
