Manusha Nanayakkara and Harin Fernando have both resigned from their positions as ministers.
As a result, Nanayakkara resigned as Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment and Fernando resigned as Minister of Tourism, Lands, Sports, and Youth Affairs. This decision was made just hours after the Supreme Court ruled yesterdaymorning (09) that the SJB’s decision to suspend Manusha Nanayakkara and Harin Fernando’s party memberships was legal.
“Manusha and Harin step down as ministers”
The two ministers filed a petition asking for an order stating that the SJB’s decision to remove them from the party was illegal; the court dismissed the petition and rendered this decision.
Consequently, Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara are not eligible to be members of Parliament based on the ruling of the Supreme Court.
The SJB Working Committee decided on July 18, 2023, to ban Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara from the party. The two lawmakers’ party membership was suspended by the SJB in May 2022 after they accepted ministerial positions in the government, despite the party’s vow to discipline them.
