In a new wave of unrest in Bangladesh, demonstrators have gathered outside the Supreme Court and given Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and the Appellate Division judges until 1 p.m. on Saturday to step down.
Hasnat Abdullah, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, declared from the SC premises that if the protesters didn’t stop, they would besiege their homes.
Asif Mahmud, the interim government’s adviser for the ministry of youth and sports, posted on Facebook earlier in the morning, calling for Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan to resign unconditionally and to end the court session in its entirety, according to The Daily Star.
“Bangladesh’s Chief Justice has decided to resign following a one-hour ultimatum from protestors.”

Following a call to step down from demonstrators, the chief justice of Bangladesh’s highest court announced on Saturday that he had decided to step down “in principle,” according to AFP, which quoted broadcaster Jamuna TV.
Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court in the capital Dhaka demanded that Obaidul Hassan, who was named to lead the court last year and is perceived as a supporter of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, resign.
