After Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa takes office as president on September 21, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera declared yesterday in Colombo that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would be reconstructed.
Yesterday (07), in Colombo, a group of SLFP MPs led by Jayasekera formally announced their support for Sajith Premadasa, the SJB presidential candidate, and the two parties signed an agreement in Battaramulla.
“Dayasiri says that if Sajith is elected president, she will rebuild the SLFP”
Jayasekera stated during the function that the SLFP is currently without a leader. He claimed that the party has not been able to develop national leaders capable of taking the party’s leadership in recent years.
“The SLFP is currently in court trying to identify its leader. I am the party’s general secretary. With the state’s support, a few ministers have taken control of the party headquarters. These ministers will no longer receive official support from the government if Premadasa wins the presidency. We’re going to retake the party headquarters and start over,” he declared.
Leader of the SJB, Sajith Premadasa, stated that the agreement signed on Wednesday is not a shady partnership.
According to former SLFP MP Thilanga Sumathipala, a 25-point program has been agreed upon by both parties.
Ranjith Maddumabandara, the SJB’s general secretary, stated that the party is dedicated to the electoral process and that the nation should only be led by a person who has the support of the people.
