Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition and SJB, informed Parliament yesterday that the promises made by ministers in response to a question posed by opposition MPs had not been carried out.Premadasa stated that a number of promises were made by the government ministers. “But these assurances are not kept,”Premadasa emphasised that in response to numerous enquiries from him and opposition MPs, the government had promised to raise the interest rate on senior citizens’ fixed deposits. “The House was informed by the government that the interest rate would be raised to fifteen percent. It is approximately 7.5 percent at the moment.

Sajith is upset that the government has repeatedly let the House down on promises.

“I have frequently brought up concerns regarding the Grama Niladhari profession in this House. I have made it clear that problems with their pay and service minutes need to be resolved. There has been no action taken. The government has decided to raise the interest rates on deposits made by senior citizens, according to House Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, the leader of the House. “We have made the decision to provide pensioners with a R 3,000 monthly allowance. The Cabinet has decided to give those pensioners an allowance of Rs 2,500 after it was discovered that some of them were not entitled to this payment.

The rupee’s decline versus the dollar led to a revision in bank deposit interest rates. Nonetheless, the government has determined that the Treasury should bear the cost of this and give each senior citizen’s fixed deposit a 2.5 percent interest rate. We have also resolved the allowances and Grama Niladhari service minute issue, and we have discovered a salary anomaly. A committee has been constituted to investigate the issue. A report on it is being awaited, stated Minister Premajayantha.
