Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe was accused by the JVP/NPP yesterday of undermining the independence of the judiciary in order to settle personal scores with judges who issue orders, rulings, and judgements that go against his wishes.
MP Vijitha Herath claimed that Minister Rajapakshe had abused Parliamentary time by disparaging judges and judicial service personnel who dared not follow the Minister’s lead.
“JVP stands up for judges and charges the Justice Minister of arbitrarily settling cases.”
Herath stated that the letter refuted every accusation made by the Justice Minister in Parliament on June 19, reading aloud a letter from the Judicial Service Commission to the Speaker about certain matters brought up by the Minister.
Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justices Vijith K. Malalgoda and E.A.G.R. Amaraekera, and Justices Vijith K. Malalgoda and Amaraekera sign the letter that the Speaker has placed on the table.
