The State and Provincial Public Service Unions Collective announced that today, August 8, and tomorrow, September 9, will see a sick-note campaign by more than 200 public sector trade unions, including those that represent surveyors and Grama Niladharis. According to Chandana Sooriyarachchi, co-convener of the collective, they are demanding a 25,000-rupee allowance.
According to Sooriyarachchi, only Executive Grade officers in the public service are eligible for the 25,000 rupee allowance that the government has provided. He threatened to escalate their trade union conflict if their demands weren’t met by the government. On Tuesday, teachers and principals will report sick (9).
“Today, more than 200 TUs will begin the sick-note campaign.”
Chinthaka Bandara, the co-convener of the United Postal Trade Unions’ Front, announced yesterday that the group would go on a 48-hour token strike on Monday, August 8, and Tuesday, August 9.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday, Bandara announced that the trade union action would start at midnight yesterday across all other post offices, and that the token strike would start at 4 p.m. yesterday (7) at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo.
