According to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Election Commission is right to move forward with holding the presidential election in 2024 and that the president has a five-year term.
The government has learned that a certain Chamindra Dayan Lenawa filed an application in the Supreme Court pursuant to and in accordance with Articles 126 read with Articles 12(1), 82(6), 3, 4, 118, and 125 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’s Constitution, pleading, among other things, for a ruling that Article 30(2) should not be construed as amended ab initio by Section 3 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and, in light of the fact that the president serves a six-year term, the Election Commission will hold the next presidential election.
“The Election Commission is acting appropriately in preparing for the 2024 presidential election.”
Additionally, the petitioners seek an interim injunction prohibiting the Election Commission’s members from proceeding with the 2024 presidential election until the Supreme Court rules on this application.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe states that the said Chamindra Dayan Lenawa has not consulted the President or his lawyers prior to filing this Application in the Supreme Court.
