Despite recent reminders from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has stated that individuals who have obtained the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) but do not earn more than Rs. 100,000 a month are exempt from paying taxes.
According to him, those who fall into this category should write to the IRD’s closest regional office and state that their monthly income does not surpass 100,000 rupees.
2.3 million Sri Lankans have acquired TINs thus far.By the end of July, the government hopes to have issued TINs to 7.3 million Sri Lankans, he stated.
“For those making up to Rs. 100,000 per month, there is no tax.”
