As of last evening, five Sri Lankan fishermen had lost their lives as a result of drinking something from a bottle that was floating in the water.According to the police, the fishermen mistook the liquid for alcohol.On June 4, the six-person crew departed Tangalle Fisheries Harbour for the deep sea. About 137 nautical miles off the Southern Coast, they discovered the bottle and filled it, believing it to be alcohol.

The Navy announced that it had sent a ship to help the fishermen. The two seriously ill fishermen were reportedly taken to a Singaporean merchant vessel and given emergency care, according to reports the Navy received.

Susantha Kahawatta, the director general of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, announced yesterday that one of the two fishermen from Sri Lanka who had been brought onto the Singaporean merchant vessel for emergency treatment had passed away.
