Ten people, including Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thera and Joseph Stalin, the general secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, were given an order by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday, June 26, to refrain from holding protests that would cause annoyance to the general public or pedestrians on the Galle Road, the NSA Roundabout, and other roads in Colombo.

A planned teacher-principal protest in Colombo is barred by a court.

The court further stated that its ruling did not infringe upon the public’s fundamental right to peaceful protest without upsetting other people. Regarding the teacher-principal protests scheduled for yesterday (26), the Court issued orders.

As a result, they were unable to block any portions of Galle Road between Ceramic Junction and the NSA roundabout and Baladaksha Mawatha. Additionally, they were not allowed to enter the premises of the President’s House, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Presidential Secretariat, or the Finance Ministry.

Nevertheless, the demonstrators continued their march, and the police dispersed them with water cannon and tear gas.
