An increasing number of tourists are drawn to Sri Lanka’s Tamil cultural center, the Jaffna Peninsula, since the end of the civil war. Though Jaffna is distinct and unique when compared to southern India, this part of Sri Lanka has more in common with India than any other area of the island nation. Travelers can embark on a variety of excursions to explore the peninsula and its neighboring islands, with Jaffna city serving as an ideal base. The largest of them, Kayts, is easily accessible by causeway from Jaffna.

Sri Lanka’s Northern Province Capital Jaffna City

The colonial Dutch Fort is Jaffna’s main draw. It’s Asia’s best kept example of a traditional Dutch fortification. The largest Hindu temple complex in Sri Lanka, the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, is located in the suburb of Nallur, which served as the capital of the Jaffna Kingdom from the 13th to the 17th century.

The primary Tamil Hindu temple in Jaffna is located just 1.5 km from Jaffna Central Station and 2.5 km from Jaffna Fort. The majority of Jaffna’s hotels and guest houses are situated in the same quarter as the railway station, which is situated halfway between the commercial city center and that significant place of worship. The white Jaffna Library building, which was destroyed during the civil war and rebuilt, is another notable landmark in Jaffna. Fish is the primary product traded at the Jaffna market, which is not surprising. Just north of the market, Kasthuriyar Road is lined with jewelry stores.

Come experience Jaffna's charm and go on an adventure.

The capital of the Jaffna Peninsula, which is located in Sri Lanka’s northernmost district, is Jaffna. It takes 10–12 hours to get to Jaffna from Colombo via comfortable intercity buses.

Off the Jaffna Peninsula, the Sri Lanka Navy operates passenger boats to the island of Nagadeepa, home of the historic Nagadeepa Buddhist temple.

The magical city of Jaffna, tucked away at the tip of Sri Lanka, is full of surprises just waiting to be discovered. After a day of exploring its lively streets, Jaffna offers the perfect place for you to relax, whether you’re looking for a cozy hideout or an opulent hotel.
